ALASKAN MALAMUTE BREED INFORMATION
Once you have decided upon a pup, prepare
yourself before  you bring him home.

Abrupt changes can produce stress in a dog, and
one symptom of stress is loss of appetite. It is not
unusual for a new puppy not to eat for the first  24
hours . A good indication that he's adjusting to his
new surroundings is eating.

The first few days concentrate on house training
and introducing the den.
All puppies need a safe place so inside puppies
should be crate trained and the crate should be left
for him with no others allowed in there, including
children and other animals.

Dominant dogs. The alpha of the pack can be
harder to deal with, Owner must take on the
dominate roll if not the dog could be destructive as
well and independent.

Any breed can have a Dominant puppy. Malamutes
are not the only breed that has them. With any
breed leadership must be that of the owner. And as
with a child that mis behaves the , space and
freedom are a factor. The more room to run , the
more they can get into. All malamutes should have a
confined area for when you are alway and when
you are asleep. Proper living arrangements must be
made before taking on a new puppy. Malamutes are
not suited for apartment living.

House training:
There are two acts of elimination. One is the
necessary and the other is a way of "marking". Be
sure as to which he is doing, Allow puppy 15 to 20
minutes to eat and then you would want to take
them out 30 minutes after words. If accidents
happen sooner you would want to start earlier in as
for taking them out.
Do not Vary his diet_he doesn't need taste or
texture variations. He need good, nutritious,
balanced food developed specifically for puppies.
He must be caught in the act . After words has no
meaning to him. Consistency is the key to quick
training.  And puppy's can not go all night without
eliminating themselves. So if you don't want to get
up half way through the night and take them out,
they will go in their confided area.

Chewing: Puppys are chewing machines. So limit
their toys to 3 or 4and watch for anything like things
that can get clogged. Socks , wash rags and I have
even had one the would eat nylon's. Bones that
splinner. Rawhide is a no no other than the crush.

There is so much to learn so do yourself a favor and
find some books and read up on it. Just because
you had a pup when you was a child doen't mean
that you know how to raise one.  Kathy at Candyrock

"You who are so wise must know that different nations have
different conception of things. You will not therefore take it amiss if
our ideas of the white man's kind of education happens not to be the
same as yours. We have had some experience of it.

Several of our young people were brought up in your colleges. They
were instructed in all your sciences; but, when they came back to
us, they were all bad runners, ignorant of every means of living in the
woods, unable to bear either cold or hunger. They didn't know how
to build a cabin, take a deer, or kill an enemy. They spoke our
language imperfectly.

They were therefore unfit to be hunters, warriors, or counsellors;
they were good for nothing.

We are, however, not the less obliged for your kind offer, though we
decline accepting it. To show our gratefulness, it the gentleman of
Virginia shall send us a dozen of their sons, we will take great care
with their education, instruct them in all we know, and make men of
them."
